How to Start Teaching A Parrot To Talk

PinkgalahOwning a bird such as a parrot can be an enjoyable and fun experience but it will be amazing if you want to teach a parrot to talk. Birds are intelligent animals so teaching them how to talk is not actually that difficult as long as you understand their behavior.  Relatively, this requires patience and determination. But if you are that patient then teaching your parrots how to talk is an easy job.

There are some guidelines that can be followed when teaching a parrot how to talk. Experts say that teaching them at an early age will be very beneficial. As young as 4 months, parrots can actually start to talk. It is advisable to start off with short words or phrases such as ‘I love you’, ‘hello’, ‘hi’, ‘thank you’ and a lot more.

The key is repetition. Say the words over and over again throughout the day for your bird to get used to hearing those short words. Parrots are observant so they can actually hear what you are saying.  In this regard, minimize or do not say something bad or your parrot will learn bad words.  Teach your parrot to talk with polite words. In teaching your parrot, hold it towards your mouth in order to keep his attention. In saying that, parrots actually tip their head to the side when looking forwards and this is caused by its eye placement in the head.  Say the words or phrases in a normal way. This way, your parrot will sound normal when it repeats the phrases. When your parrot successfully mimics what you say, reward it with excitement, treats and praise.

Rewards will encourage your parrot to do the trick again and again. Try words or phrases which are based upon your actions. You can try object lessons.  Try to demonstrate the words or phrases you are saying. For instance, if you want it to say “open the door” physically open the door and say “open the door”. Teach your parrot to talk by introducing its name, your name, and the names of other family members in order for him to be familiar with your friends and family. It is rather fun when you hear your name from a bird.

When your bird has mastered numerous short phrases or words, you can begin to teach longer repetition by means of playing a radio, music or television in his presence. Your bird will definitely come up with a lot of longer phrases on his own. Your guests will be delighted hearing your parrot talk. Some birds will learn to talk quite quickly while others might take longer since not all parrots learn at the same pace. It will be easier for the parrot to learn more words if you develop a harmonious relationship between the two of you and for just the one person to start teaching the bird until he has learnt the ability to talk.  Teach your parrot to talk by loving him, caring for him and building his trust.
